Coming to ACOG 2025: Delfina’s new research is redefining prenatal exercise.
At the 2025 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Annual Clinical & Scientific Meeting in Minneapolis, Delfina’s data science team will share new research focused on improving exercise guidance during pregnancy, presented by Sara Sauer, PhD, Senior Data Scientist at Delfina. Delfina’s poster, titled “Effective Components of Exercise Interventions During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis”, shares findings from the first phase of a collaborative effort between Delfina and Mayo Clinic Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Linda Szymanski, MD, Ph.D.
Currently, ACOG recommends that pregnant individuals engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. However, there is less clarity on which specific types of exercise programs are most effective in enhancing pregnancy outcomes. Our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to address that gap, identifying the most effective components of prenatal exercise programs for reducing the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), excessive gestational weight gain (eGWG), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP).
Our analysis revealed six key components that correlate with improved outcomes:
Turning Evidence Into Action: What’s Next
Building on these insights, our team at Delfina is developing personalized, evidence-based exercise content within the Delfina platform—designed to align with the findings from our own research. We understand that every pregnancy is unique. That’s why Delfina’s in-app video workouts will be designed to meet members where they are, combining scientific evidence with personal preferences. And to make movement more accessible, we’ll encourage the use of everyday household items, like tables, water jugs, or sturdy chairs, so members can stay active without needing special equipment.
We’re planning 90 short, easy-to-follow exercise videos, each centered on a single movement, featuring clear instructions and safe modifications. The videos will cover both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercises, as our study revealed that the combination is most effective for improving maternal health outcomes. The content will be tailored by trimester and aligned with member needs, whether for cardio, strength, lower-impact movement, or mobility. All exercises are being designed to align with light-to-moderate intensity guidelines, consistent with research-backed recommendations for safe prenatal activity.
These videos will also include simple visual cues that help members understand which muscles they’re working and how they stay engaged throughout. To support longer sessions, as recommended by the findings from our study, we’ll provide guidance on how members can combine movements into personalized, full-length workouts.
Because every stage of pregnancy brings different physical needs, this content will also include trimester-specific guidance:
